ATO Seminars for Trustees of Self Managed Superannuation Funds

-  The Tax Office has announced that it will be conducting several seminars for trustees of Self Managed Superannuation Funds [SMSF's] to assist in educating them about their roles and responsibilities.

  1. As part of its efforts to ensure that trustees of SMSF's are adequately prepared to undertake their roles and responsibilities, the Tax Office has various resources available including publications and seminars.

  2. The Tax Office is currently running two seminars to help educate trustees of SMSF's fulfil their roles and responsibilities.

  3. The first seminar titled 'Running a self-managed fund' is targeted at existing trustees of SMSF's. The seminar covers the following:

    • Obligations of trustees in running a SMSF;
    • The rules governing the fund's ability to accept contributions and rollovers;
    • Trustees responsibilities in relation to investment decisions;
    • Rules governing payment of benefits to members; and
    • Compliance reporting and administrative obligations.

  4. The second seminar is for new or intending trustees of SMSF's titled 'Role and responsibilities of new trustees' which will cover the following:

    • Roles and responsibilities of SMSF trustees;
    • Things to consider and have in place before establishing and operating a SMSF;
    • Rules governing contributions and paying of benefits to members; and
    • Where to find help and further information.
